A country where ancient traditions and futuristic technology seamlessly coexist, Japan has much to offer for every kind of traveller: beautiful ski resorts, untouched beaches and, of course, centuries of history and culture. Be it marvelling at the beauty of changing seasons, exploring Tokyo districts dedicated to anime and manga or relaxing in mountain hot springs, one is bound to find Japan as uniquely captivating.
Stroll through Kawagoe, famous for its old storehouse merchant buildings, ancient temples, shrines and castles. After a trip back in history, a short walk will get you to Kashiya Yokocho, a stone-paved shopping lane lined with stores that sell traditional Japanese sweets. Here you can discover and enjoy all kinds of traditional Japanese desserts, alongside modern candies and ice cream.
Kawagoe is just 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo and is perfect for a day trip away from the hustle bustle of a big city to enjoy historical sites, traditional shops and seasonal weekend events.
The Jigokudani Monkey Park is the only place in the world to see Japanese macaques bathe in hot springs. The park is less than one hour from Nagano City by bus but, before reaching the park, you will need to walk through the forest for 30 minutes. After arriving, enjoy the sight of monkeys playing around the water and inside the hot spring. Take a bus ride to Yudanaka to enjoy a hot-spring (onsen) experience of your own!
Travellers who aren’t keen on having a full onsen experience can soak in the area’s hot spring water at a free footbath located right outside the Yudanaka train station before proceeding to see the Sekai Heiwa Kannon, an imposing 25 meters Buddha statue that is a short trek away!

Currency: Japan’s official currency is the yen (¥). ATMS are widely available and the easiest way of to obtain cash. Beware not all ATMS accept non-Japanese cards; among the best ones to withdraw with foreign debit and credit cards are the machines in 7-Elevens, at post offices and Citibank ATMs. Banks and post offices exchange most major foreign currencies. Cash is still the preferred way to pay in Japan and whilst cards are increasingly accepted in cities and major establishments, bring enough cash when travelling to the countryside.
Travellers from 68 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, USA, UK and many European countries, can travel to Japan visa-free for a period of up to 90 days. Certain other nationalities need to apply for a tourist visa at a Japanese consulate or embassy before entering the country. Beware that all travellers may be asked for proof of onward travel.
