Discova Guide Dedi Wardana’s Incredible Journey from Cleaner to Cultural Ambassador

November 6, 2024

Becoming a tour guide was a natural progression for Discova Indonesia’s Komang Dedi Wardana, who aspired to speak English fluently and explore the world one day. Dedi grew up in a small village in Bali surrounded by lush rice paddies and ancient temples. He eventually began working with a cleaning service for an airline, where he felt the need to brush up his language skills.

“During my duties, I often encountered situations where I couldn’t understand the flight attendants’ requests due to my limited English. This experience fostered a strong desire to learn the language and travel the world someday,” he says.

Hence, guiding was an obvious choice for Dedi, who imagined himself talking with visitors from different countries and sharing insights into Bali’s rich culture and traditions, just as he would want to experience other countries. He aspired to be a bridge between the locals and the visitors and create unforgettable experiences for guests in his country.

However, it has not always been smooth sailing for him as a tour guide. Sometimes, he has had to manage diverse dynamics within a group or adapt to unexpected situations. Having said that, job satisfaction in his work can also be generous and tremendously encouraging.

One of my biggest wins is creating bonds between travellers and witnessing the lasting friendships formed after the trip. This makes the experience truly rewarding for me,” he adds.

Dedi, who has worked with Discova since 2017, asserts that the Discova Guide Academy has played a significant role in helping him pursue his ambitions. Through the Guide Academy, he gained the confidence to speak English and received comprehensive training in guiding techniques and cultural understanding. This experience allowed him to acquire the essential skills and knowledge to pursue his dream of becoming a professional tour guide.

As a guide, Dedi is also keen on busting any unfounded myths about his country. On top of the list is the misconception that Indonesia is not safe for solo female travellers.

For a destination like Indonesia which is replete with natural and cultural wonders, Dedi recommends our Bali Tastescapes Evening Tour for any visitor coming to the island. This captivating food tour (featuring popular local dishes including snacks, mains, desserts and a cool beverage) takes guests through the bustling streets of Bali making them feel like a true insider.

He informs, “This tour offers a unique blend of adventure and culinary surprises by combining a leisurely bike ride through the city of Denpasar, with an exploration of local markets and a taste of authentic street food, making it a truly immersive experience.”

In Dedi’s opinion, a guide should be knowledgeable, passionate, empathetic and open to positive or constructive feedback.

By analysing feedback, I can understand customer preferences and expectations. This allows me to grow myself and create better experiences for travellers,” adds Dedi.

Looking towards the future, Dedi aspires to become a professional tour leader and increase awareness of sustainable tourism in the country. He is also passionate about teaching and sharing his experiences with future generations of guides, urging them to be curious, open-minded, and eager to learn so they can have successful careers in the travel industry.
