The Eileen Yee
Education Fund

A Tribute to a Visionary Leader’s Legacy

In celebration of our friend, colleague, and leader, Eileen Yee, who unexpectedly left us, Discova has established an educational fund in her honour. Eileen was known for her pink hair, infectious smile, relentless positive energy, and unwavering passion for educational travel and local communities. Those close to her at Discova affectionately nicknamed her 101, reflecting the Chinese pronunciation of her name. It is fitting to use this special number as a symbol to inspire us to dream big, strive for more, and create lasting impact in the communities we work in. Eileen was passionate about setting ambitious goals, which led to the creation of our first initiative: Project 101.

A fund impact report will be published and shared with donors on a 6 monthly basis. For sponsors of scholarships, an individual update will be provided that gives an insight into the sponsored student’s progress. This will be suitably anonymised to align with Childsafe policies.

Our Mission to Empower Futures

Starting in June 2024, The Eileen Yee Education Fund will provide scholarships to disadvantaged high school students in communities where Discova has grassroots connections. With an initial target of supporting 101 students, our goal is to reduce the high school drop-out rate. This will enable students to reach adulthood with a quality education that allows them to pursue a broad range of life opportunities.

Help us make a tangible difference—donate today and transform a student’s future.

  1. Sponsor a student in year 10, through their three years of high school for USD 900 for the full period and receive frequent updates on the impact of your donation or;
  1. One-off community donation that supports a pool of current students in year 11 and 12, to complete their high school education and receive community-based progress.

How it Works

The scholarship grant will provide financial assistance to students, enabling them to successfully complete their three-year high school education. For as little as USD 300 per year, students can receive access to all the materials and equipment they need for school, including a bicycle, a backpack, a uniform, and all the stationery they require for their studies.

Why High School Education?

The UN estimates that by 2030, 84 million children and young people will be forced to stay out of school. Theis can be due to socio-economic pressures and hidden costs associated with education. In many families that face financial hardships, there is pressure on young people to earn and contribute to the household that prioritises immediate income over long-term educational benefits. Additionally, even when school fees are covered, the hidden costs of schooling—such as transportation, uniforms, and tutoring—can be prohibitive for low-income families. These financial barriers, combined with the need for young people to contribute to household income, significantly impede access to education, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting future opportunities for millions of young people.

Student Selection Process

In collaboration with teachers and local communities, students from low-income backgrounds will be identified and invited to apply for the scholarships. To be awarded, these students must complete a 60-day online learning program, demonstrating their commitment to education. Following this, they will apply their newly acquired skills by creating a personal statement detailing how the scholarship will benefit them and their community.

What Does Your Donation Support?

Your donation will cover essential non-tuition expenses that hinder education, varying by country. In Cambodia, it might fund books and uniforms; in Vietnam or Indonesia, transport and meal allowances; and in Thailand, resources for displaced Burmese students. This ensures students in different regions overcome specific challenges and access education. No administrative fees apply, so 100% of your donation goes directly to helping students.
